What is API?
application programming interface
An API is how two applications exchange data automatically, without someone copying information by hand.
Example
Your online store can ask the ERP for the client list or send a new order straight through the API: no export and manual import.
Why it matters
An API lets you connect tools you already use so data flows on its own. Access is usually via a key you can revoke anytime.
